Zivix today announced that its jamstik, a portable digital instrument which it hails as “The Guitar For Your iPad, iPhone and Mac,” is now available. The company claims that the jamstik is “the only companion instrument for Apple devices that wirelessly gives users real tactile feedback and a next-generation guitar experience.”

The American-made, $299.99 jamstik, which connects wirelessly to Apple devices, allows experienced musicians as well as novices to learn, play and create music virtually anywhere.

At a little more than 15 inches long, the jamstik comes in a compact, backpack-friendly size. It has real strings and frets, so it feels more or less like a traditional guitar. Unlike a traditional guitar, however, it never needs tuning, and its infrared light-sensing fretboard “sees” finger placement and gives real-time feedback to the Apple device. In addition to guitar, the jamstik even can create the sound of “virtually any instrument,” says the company.

The MIDI-enabled device includes a music education app called JamTutor, and is compatible with hundreds of MIDI apps, including GarageBand. Its Arcade mode “leverages an arcade-style interface for fun exercises and learning TAB, and jamMix is a hybrid DJ/guitar music remix application that allows players to have fun playing music no matter their experience level,” stated the company.
