We all know that it is very hard to break into a strong market like handheld gaming. Nokia, Gozmondo, and others have all tried and failed thus far to Nintendo and Sony. Fortunately the GP2X has something else going for it: Linux. Running the open source software allows anyone to create games and programs for it, something that will probably never come to the Gameboy, DS, or PSP. Fortunately, for all of us non-programmers it comes with games likes of Quake and Duke Nukem 3D preinstalled, and others are available for download at the official website. The console is powered by a 2 x 200MHz CPUs (much stronger than the DS) and has 64MB of on-board memory. There are stereo speakers and an SD card allows you to move DivX videos, photos and music on to it for mobile playback on the 320 x 240 screen.
The system doesn’t launch until next week, but you can pre-order it here.
