Gmail has begun to offer the options of opening an attached XLS (Microsoft Excel) file, in an email, in Google Spreadsheets. This is a handy way for people to view excel sheets if they do not have Microsoft Excel loaded on their PC and reduces the amount of memory your computer needs to run these programs. More than anything, the integration proves how and why Google is making their way into spreadsheets and docs. One can only assume that the next option will be to open a word file in Google documents – extending the Google franchise one more step.
