Within the last few years, digital cameras have taken a stronghold in households all over the world. All the major brands like Kodak, Canon, Sony, Fuji, etc., are flooding the market with different kinds of digital cameras, point and shoots, SLR’s, professionals, ultra compacts, etc., so that it’s become quite hard to choose something that really fits you.

And yet, sales of digital cameras haven’t slowed down one bit. According to CNN, sales have even exceeded analyst’s expectations this year, mainly due to lower prices. With affordable prices, high demand and a multitude of choices, it’s not hard to predict that this trend will continue on for quite some time, as more and more people ditch their old film-based cameras (it’d be interesting to see what percentage of the population still have these) and go digital.

Even once most people on the planet have digital cameras, the need to have the latest and greatest will always play into marketers’ hands and create a market for them. Just look at the evolution of the number of megapixels that occurs every year, when in reality, people probably don’t need more than 3 MP for high quality digital prints.

Finally, with such demand for digital cameras, it would be safe to assume that memory card makers are smiling with glee right now, because as more digital cameras hit consumers, the higher the demand will be for storage space of those pictures taken.
