It is a wonder why there aren’t more portable Linux based computers out there in the market. Is this about to change? Linutop does bring a Linux based diskless computer system to a very saturated market of relatively cheap laptop computers.
This lightweight system is small enough to (almost) fit in the palm of your hands. It runs on an AMD processor, weighs approximately 8 oz, has 256 MB of RAM and is packaged with most of the common utilities, software needed for the everyday light user and internet surfer (i.e. AbiWord Word Processor, Evince PDF reader, Firefox Web browser, Gaim instant messenger and Totem media player). It claims to target the everyday internet surfer but could be used in other ways too, e.g. PoS terminals and embedded vehicle PCs.
Product price and retail distribution outlets have not been detailed but we would expect it to come in at $500 or less. It remains to be seen how popular this system will be in the fickle (and less than forgiving) laptop market.
