Apple’s recently released Apple TV has been hacked and given the ability to play XviD movies alongside the stock .mov and H.264 format.

This is a well received surprise for early adopters of the unit, it may take some work, but if XviD is what you like, it’s worth every second.

Confirming Walt Mossberg’s claim that the media hub runs a custom version of Mac OS X, the technique involves removing the hard drive and mounting it on a Mac, where it appears as a native HFS volume. Installing the SSH server Dropbear, the video container Perian, and a custom script lets the Apple TV play files outside of its normal MPEG-4 and H.264 standards.

One reason why many people are holding back on the Apple TV is its non-existent ability to play XviD out of the box. Now, for those who have been wanting this feature it is possible, but will take a little work.

  2. It was bound to happen. It makes sense, to me, that Apple have closed in support for other video formats – they're wanting to not only capatilise on the technology, but also on the distribution of video and entertainment. A sort of cable-tv in a different sort of way. Very good business sense, if you ask me!

But, they would surely have known that people would be able to hack it (and people would be able to hack it easily.) I'm sure they're not too bothered about it – they know that most people are probably not going to go through so much effort, and will be happy to just download from iTunes.
