The Olympus SP-550 UZ is the first ultra-wide (18x) optical zoom digital camera. Because of the wide viewing angle Olympus needed to go with a wide-angle view finder as well, via Kopin. The SP-550 UZ’s focal length extends from 28 to 504mm (35 mm camera equivalent), enabling photographers to see through their subject’s pores. The camera does this at 7.1 megapixels and a burst rate of 15 frames per second. Other features of the SP-550 UZ are Dual Image Stabilization that eliminates blur, Pre-Capture technology to capture anything that moves, and Bright Capture Technology that allows to shoot in low light without a flash.
The model began shipping last month for $499.99.
