April Fools: Apple Corp. to buy Sony

We all know that Apple is making a run for the big leagues… First with Intel based Macs, then Boot Camp running Windows OS, the iPod, the iPhone, Apple TV, and changing their name from Apple Computer to Apple Corp. The problem is that Apple is still a rather small company in terms of developers and current product line and without pairing up with someone else it would take them years to get to where Steve Jobs wants the company to be.

Given this, we actually got a phone call from a legit tipster announcing that Apple is in the early stages of a deal to purchase a great deal of Sony. If there was one company to purchase Sony would be it considering that they know hardware very well, but lack in the software department (a place where Apple shines). Additionally, there was a time when the two companies leveraged one anther’s design experts, and once would have to agree that Sony and Apple are the most design conscientious consumer electronics companies out there.

Sony obviously doesn’t compete in a major way in the portable music or video market and while their Sony Ericsson phones are positioned as either Walkman models or Cybershot models, they flourish in Europe but struggle in America. Apple would be able to leverage Sony’s extremely successful camera line-up, HD capabilities (Blu-ray, camcorders, drives, displays/HDTVs), and gaming — an area Apple has rumored to enter for a long time. Sony and Apple have both been driving forces behind the direct to customer market and retail stores, as well as creating status symbols from their products.

The tipster, who obviously asked not to be named, said that we should expect to hear more over the next few weeks but wanted to advise people that they should hold off on purchasing Sony products for the meantime since Apple has already begun development on major overhaul software that will be effective immediately upon completion of the deal.

What do you think, is this the move needed to push Apple out ahead of Samsung, LG, Philips, Panasonic, etc? Or will this grow the small cult-like company too fast?

Update: This was an April Fools joke. Thanks to all of you who called it out right away, and shame on you to think that we would get something like Apple Corp. wrong if this was a real post. :)

  6. APPLE NEEDS GAMING. Apple tv device can't compete against future Microsoft products if you can't play games on it. It would be too difficult for Apple start up a gaming division on it's own, the market is too well established, therefore Apple needs to buy someone. Sony or Nintendo fit's the bill perfectly. I think Sony is the better play because Apple could spin off some of Sony's assets to help pay for the takeover (like selling Sony Entertainment to Disney perhaps?).

  9. Apple does not need Sony. And it's Apple Inc. Not Apple Corp! Apple Corps Ltd. is a multi-armed multimedia corporation, founded in January 1968 by British rock band the Beatles.

  13. I think he mean merger. Take over Sony is a bit difficult. Bill Gate, M$ the richest company in the world, want to hostile takeover Nintendo Co Ltd, 7 years ago. Nintendo got the wind of it, buy it stock back, stock go up. Hostile takeover fail before M$ even started.
