Toshiba 30inch OLED

Toshiba has announced plans to ship an organic electroluminescence display (OEL, or more commonly known as OLED) in 2009. Their target size will be 30 inches, which beats most manufacturers’, including Sony’s prototypes. Toshiba does not plan to directly compete with the current technology leader, LCD. They do however expect that the OLED technology’s superiority, which includes better viewing angles and contrast (1million:1 anyone?), not to mention lower manufacturing costs, will be recognized as the production volume goes up.

Toshiba had previously planned 2015 as the launch window for OEL, which would put them in the time frame of other technologies like SED and FED displays. We’ll have to wait, but once these displays are released we’ll have an expanded amount of places to mount the screens as they’re paper-thin.
