Samsung LogoSamsung announced Friday that it plans to have a dual-format machine that will play both Blu-ray Disc and HD DVD software in stores in time for the holidays. This will mark the second dual format player to hit the market as LG Electronics currently has their BH100 Super Blu Player in stores.

With a lot of guessing about who will win this format war, it seems that it could still be decided either way. Currently Blu-ray is edging out HD DVD but with more option choices like this we could see that flip sides. We are seeing Blu-ray players coming from Samsung, Sony, Phillips and Panasonic while only Toshiba is giving us a dedicated HD DVD player. Of course you can also make up your mind with your gaming console as the PS3 offers Blu-ray playback and the Xbox 360 gives the option for an add on HD DVD drive.

The studio’s are still split on support as well with most giving support to the Blu-ray side, however Warner who currently supports both Blu-ray and HD DVD is looking to introduce a “Total HD” disk that is dual sided with Blu-ray on one side and HD DVD on the other, giving the consumer the choice.

Up to now most of the options are still pricey and with the lack of future it’s still a little nerve racking to commit to either format. I could go either way for my HD content, let’s see who gets them in stores at an affordable price point first.
