Windows XPI guess when you are currently the 2nd largest PC manufacturer you can afford to make some moves that Microsoft may not like. Microsoft had recently announced that by 2008 they were going to drop the OEM product and all computer builders would be required to sell Vista loaded PC’s.

Beginning in January Dell had begun to remove Windows XP from it’s line and as of March had only 2 models that were available with Windows XP installed. Dell has received many requests since to keep Windows XP as an option for new computers. Although Windows XP cannot be found on all models you will now be able to get it on 4 Inspiron notebooks and 2 Dimension desktops.

There is no word on how long this will last, unless Microsoft will also listen and offer to extend that early 2008 deadline.

  1. Guess the "new and improved" isn't quite as popular as Microsoft says.

Bought (for $5.00 from Microsoft) and tried the RC1 package some months ago and was not impressed even though the computer scored almost the maximum on the MS scale designed to let one know how well the "experience" will be.

It is possible to make a good OS that won't be vulnerable to all of the PC ills but MS has no intention of doing so; rather, the MS wish seems to be keeping up the reputation of providing software of mediocrity as it has in the past.

  2. After checking with BestBuy and CompUSA about 4 weeks ago to see if they were offerring any PC's with XP (they weren't), I wound up buying a Dell simply because they were still offerring several models with XP. (I got the Optiplex GX740 Minitower.) Thanks to XP's Settings and File Transfer utility, the changeover to my new PC went surprisingly well. My only complaint with Dell was that I started getting flooded with 500-600 spam emails A DAY. After two emails to them bitterly complaining about the flood, they unscribed me and the flood is down to a trickle.

  4. MS is bound and determined to jam this new OS down our throats. A lot of us users are very happy with our current OS whether is be WIN 98SE or XP. Glad Dell is at least keeping some options open to us.

  5. While Vista's nice and all it is quite a hog. I just got a new computer at work with it on their and I just purchased a laptop for home and I was pleased to find a retailsurplus one with XP on it so it wouldn't take all the RAM. Even with a gig added Vista is still slow sometimes. They need to rectify that. It should be up to consumers which version to use.
