As technology grows, so do the storage requirements for gadgets such as cell phones, MP3 players and digital cameras. Capabilities such as high definition video recording, tens of megapixels of image resolution and high definition music also require larger and larger amounts of storage space.
The popular method of storage in these devices is of course SD (Secure Digital) cards (well, the more popular method I should say, to ease the anger from the xD, MMC, and MemoryStick camps). There are 3 variations of SD cards, the original, miniSD, and the microSD, with microSD being the smallest one and typically used in next generation cell phones.
Samsung has announced that it has developed a 8GB microSD card for mobile phones. This new SD card from Samsung will feature a read speed of 16 MBps and write speed of 6 MBps, and is claimed to be 1.5 times faster than regular microSD cards.
The previous largest capacity available was 4GB, and even that isn’t a mainstay in the market yet, so the 8GB card should take some time before it becomes a regular. Market research firm DataQuest predicts that only in 2010 will 8GB microSD cards become the market mainstream, that is unless some other form of storage comes up to replace these SD cards soon.
