With enhancements to the suite of applications comprising iLife 08, and the addition of a new feature, Apple made a lot of fans happy yesterday.
Probably the most notable was the introduction of the .Mac Web Gallery which is fully integrated as you would expect with iPhoto ’08 and iMovie ’08, and lets you share your photos and movies on the web. “.Mac Web Gallery automatically builds a website containing photo galleries and movies that can be viewed on any modern computer or iPhone. Photos can be downloaded to print at sizes up to 16×20, and movies can be viewed at higher-than-DVD resolution.”
Events in iPhoto looks very impressive with its ability to group all photos into Events, each containing a day’s worth of photos , which will make keywording and sorting the pictures much easier.
In many ways the ‘problem’ with iLife is that it does a lot of things and it does them very well, but very often not better than the commercial offerings that are available. Anyone buying a Mac for the first time will love iLife, and low level home users will probably find it attractive, but the higher level user will find stronger alternatives in the market. The whole is certainly better than the individual component in this case!
Still at $79.95 is is good value BUT don’t forget the $99.95 for a .Mac account that is required to really make it work properly.
“Apple has taken iLife ’08 to a new level that is years ahead of anything available for the PC,” said Steve Jobs, Apple’s CEO. “We think iLife ’08 gives Mac users even more reasons to love their Macs, and PC users even more reasons to switch.”
