The compact disc is turning 25 years old today. The first CD was manufactured at the Philips factory near Hanover, Germany on August 17, 1982. Since the launch, the CD has gone on to sell over 200 billion and is credited in the shift from analog to digital in the music industry; which as we all know lead to more disc formats such as the CD-Rom and DVD. It is estimated that if you took all the CD’s that were ever produced you would be able to circle the earth six times around.
The first CD that was manufactured at the Philips factory in Germany was “The Visitors” by ABBA. The CD’s were first made available to the public in November 1982 with a selection of around 150 titles, that included mostly classical music. Philips also introduced the first CD player, the CD1000 in Japan in November with a European and US release following in March of 1983. After the release of the first players the CD quickly took off with more than 1000 titles being put to market. In 1985 Dire Straights added their music to the CD catalog and with the “Brothers In Arms” album made the first fully digital recording (DDD) that went on the become not only the top selling CD of the time, the third greatest for the decade and also the first to sell over one million copies on CD.
With the superior quality for the CD it was quickly adopted and as we can all see now have gone on from just the initial CD to offer multiple disc formats to include the CD-Rom, CD-R, CD-RW, DVD, DVD , DVD RW and now the next generation formats like Blu-ray. Even with the current growth of digital music downloads the CD and disc format still remain popular.
