It seems that the much anticipated Palm OS is going to be delayed even longer than originally expected. We had seen previous reports of delays till 2008, but now a report from The Guardian is stating that Palm is projecting another 12-18 months. That could move the release out to early 2009.
The new Palm OS is a Linux based version of their current software and has been in development for about 5 years now. It seems Palm should stick to hardware development and license the software from some of the other great mobile software providers such as Windows Mobile, Symbian, RIM or one of the mobile versions of Linux. (I am uneasy about calling Windows Mobile “great”, but they do pump out new versions without this lengthy delay. -Ed.)
With the recent death of the Foleo and the unenthusiastic response with the Treo 500v Palm is not looking so fresh at the moment. Palm does have a loyal fan base, but I am not sure how long they are willing to wait.
