AOL has owned the wow.com domain since 1998 when it was acquired along with other assets of Compuserve. For such a great 3-letter domain name it has been mostly unused since. Now rumors are starting to circulate that AOL has found the perfect (and most obvious) use for the domain, they have transferred the domain to the AOL Games Group to create a World of Warcraft based social network.
Considering most people recognize World of Warcraft as WoW, the domain must receive a large amount of traffic just based on accidental traffic. Aside from simply selling the domain to Blizzard this seems by far the best way for AOL to generate some decent money from an already popular name. Of course this is still just in the rumor stage and no set time frame or website plans have been officially announced.
