Who would have thought that Microsoft’s 30GB White Zune would be the top seller of hard drive players on Amazon. Well, believe it or not, it has happened. Coupling with the Zune’s announcement and the much lower prices, it seems that people are becoming much more interested in the Zune now.
At the time of this writing, the top 5 sellers on Amazon are the White 30GB Zune at number 1, followed by the Black 30GB iPod, the Black Zune, the Brown Zune, and a Creative Zen 30GB player.
It looks like the iPod is getting some competition now. Don’t look twice, but here comes the Zune knocking on Apple’s door.

That category is very inaccurate. Don't you think it's strange that no current generation iPod is on the list and the 4th generation, 3 year old iPod is at number 23?
If you go here though…

There are 11 iPods outselling the Zune
For some reason Amazon does not categorize any current-gen hard drive players, including the new iPod Classics, in the hard drive category. Looking at the more broad "MP3 players" category, there are a few interesting consequences:
- Every iPod classic is ranked much higher than the highest Zune 30.
- If you restrict the category to "hard drive-based MP3 players released LAST year" then only one previous-gen iPod is outselling the Zune 30s. This is kind of fair because those iPods are the ones the Zune 30s were intended to compete with, but at the same time it isn't fair at all because those iPods would be selling much faster if they were still the newest iPods.
- Pre-orders for the Zune 80 are actually significantly higher than Zune 30 orders, although still behind about a dozen iPod products.
- In addition to the new classics and the black previous-gen iPod, there are 4 current-gen Nanos, a previous-gen Nano, and a current-gen Shuffle ranked ahead of the Zune 30s, along with the $300-$400 iPod Touch.
I call Bullsh*t.
First, and most obvious, Zune is number one. Second, The No. 2 seller is an iPod that's no longer made – and it's listed at $490 for 30GB?? Third, 3 of the top 5 are Zunes? Fourth, why would anyone buy a 1G Zune when the 2G was just announced. Four, why would ANYONE buy the faux fecal brown Zune? Five, why would anyone buy an 80GB iPod Video for $600 when the classic costs $250? Finally, where is the iPod classic, new nano, or touch?
This page was hacked, either externally or internally. It's the weekend, so the kids are without adult supervision, and so poorly executed that there's no other reasonable explanation.
Okay lose the nano and touch but number 7 is the Zune doesn't show up until number 15 in sales for all MP3 players, behind 3 HD-based iPods."
