Facebook trying to compete with iTunes?

Facebook Share Music

Facebook is apparently trying to launch a competitor to the iTunes Music Store, says All Facebook (the Unofficial Facebook Blog). For awhile now it seems Facebook has been trying to lock up deals with major record labels for this music platform, which is said to be geared towards college students.

Wait, wait wait. Let’s back up there a second. Facebook is taking on iTunes?

Now, Nick O’Neill of All Facebook says this comes from an “extremely reliable” source. Just my 2 cents, but why is Facebook even considering this? Who would buy music from an online site, especially given the alternative comes in the form of the trusty iTMS.

To play Devil’s Advocate against myself, Facebook is a leading social network and now a common household name. Additionally, they have a great group of developers plus an open source platform on which tons of developers have added a handful of great applications.

Take this with a grain of salt, but answer me this: Would you buy music from an online site rather than a desktop application?
