The use of mobile phones on US flights is not going to be allowed anytime soon, the FAA has “ruled out the use of mobile phones on planes for the foreseeable future.”
Federal Aviation Authority (FAA), stated that “proposals to lift the ban on in-flight mobiles had caused such an outcry [that] they had been dropped.”
Unfortunately other than dropping the proposal, we have no clear idea when or if they will be open for discussion again. Over in Europe a few airlines to include Ryanair, Tap Air Portugal and Air France have recently begun allowing passengers to use mobile phones during flights.
Overall I am kind of glad to see this happen, planes are often very crowded and noisy to begin with. I am not sure I want the person next to me gabbing away during the flight, especially considering how many people have no concept of how to use a mobile phone and end up screaming so they can be heard better.

Airlines need to make money from Cell phones used during flight, and people want to use their phones during flight, they just don't want to hear other people speaking on theirs. If Airlines would just make a rule that people cannot speak on their cell phones unless they use a ZipIt like device (www.zipitinc.com), everyone would be happy.
