It looks like Sony made the correct move by offering the 40GB version of the Playstation 3 for $399. Sony was selling an average of 30-40k consoles a week, but the week of October 29th, they sold around 75k, and 100k the next week.
“It’s the breakthrough we’ve been anticipating,” Sony chairman and CEO Howard Stringer told The Associated Press. “We’ve been holding our breath.”
Sony stated they are taking advantage of the shortage of Wii consoles and that with the stronger sales of PS3s they’ll have a stronger position in the high-definition (you know, HD DVD vs Blu-Ray) format wars. To date, Nintendo has sold 9.3 million Wii consoles, Microsoft has sold 11.6 million Xbox 360 consoles, and Sony has sold 5 million PS3 consoles. The projections for March 2008 are 22.3 million Wii consoles and 11 million PS3′s.
