Yesterday at 1:09pm in the UK, Christmas officially started and a record was made. £750,000 was spent in one minute online, which if nothing else is a good indication of what the modern worker does during their lunch hour.
The previous record for a single day was £291 million on “Mega Monday” last week, but experts forecast that yesterdays trading would break £370 million. This works out at 128 people spending £100 each every minute.
Other facts that may be of interest:
The most sought after items were the Nintendo Wii games console, followed by the iPod Shuffle and iPod Nano digital music players, Boots No 7 Protect and Perfect face cream, and Gillette’s Fusion razor sets.
Monday is traditionally the biggest day for online shopping because customers spend their weekends browsing in high-street shops and discussing ideas for gifts with their families before going online when they return to work.
An online survey of 1,200 people by eDigital Research suggests that 87% of people would buy some presents online and 63% would buy most of them online.
Hopefully the delivery will be better than last year when over 500,000 presents arrived after Christmas day.
