thesixtyone dot comHow do you find out about new music? Hear it on the radio? Get a CD from that shady guy in the mail room? Or just randomly purchase what you find on iTunes? Today, how you find it may be changing.

Meet thesixtyone.com, a new, well, I am not sure what to call it other than cool. It is a music site that lets anyone rate a song (they call it bumping) pushing it up the list. But doing so costs points, so you can’t just bump willy nilly. But if others bump what you bump, your rewarded with more points and the good music percolates to the homepage. Music is the game.

Expect lots of up and comers, indie, and some stuff that certainly won’t float your boat, but gems that you’ll fall in love with. I am listening now and Bon Iver is pretty darn good. You can even purchase DRM-free music from the site via AmazonMP3.

At the site you can listen to the current tops, all time hits, random selections and whats new. You earn points by listening to music. The two that started the site, state it’s mission as:

“thesixtyone is a music discovery game that rewards those who help others listen to good new music. Any artist can add their music to thesixtyone in a process that’s fast and simple.”

It’s definitely worth checking out.
