Jammie Thomas, the woman who became the first person to have a jury trial over file sharing has just lost her lawyer. Thomas had previously lost the case against the RIAA and was fined $220,000 for sharing 24 songs. Her lawyer Todder, has just announced that he will not be able to represent Ms. Thomas any longer because the appeal would be too expensive on a pro-bono basis.
Thomas has been selling T-shirts, coffee mugs, and women’s underwear to help cover costs, however according to Todder that has “actually raised very little.”
“I’m very confident she will find representation,” Toder added. “There are many passionate organizations, such as the Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF), chomping on the bit to help her.”
Hopefully Todder is correct and she will be able to find some other legal representation. One bit of good news has come out in this story, Ms. Thomas has learned that she will not have to pay the legal costs for the record companies.
Currently Thomas is waiting for the federal district judge in Minnesota to decide whether or not to reduce the $220,000 fine that was originally imposed, which according to Todder is a violation of the Constitution. While Thomas still has quite a bit of money to begin making payments on, it sounds like the final decision is still far off, better hope to sell some more merchandise in the future and hopefully cover some of that fine.
