Gmail Invisible Status

Ever wanted to just quickly log in and check your email only to have a bunch of friends instantly hit you up on chat, well now you can do just that, just switch yourself to invisible. A new option that was added to Gmail Chat will let you switch yourself from visible to invisible. The nice part about this is that while you are logged in and invisible you will still be able to see your friends status, they just cannot see you, meaning you may actually be able to get your work completed.

This new option works in the latest version of Gmail on Firefox 2 and IE7. The only limitation seems to be that you cannot switch yourself to invisible if you are logged in using another (gadget or desktop application) Gmail Client.

Great tip. Except that if everyone does it, then you won't be able to see your friends' status either. I just keep myself logged in all the time and I'll come back to my desk and there's a whole bunch of "hello, are you there?" chats where the people are now offline.

You know what? I have been wanting this feature since I have used Gmail. I don't really have enough friends in my Gtalk though that would bother me, but I have a boyfriend that is always online. Hehehe… There are just times that I want to check my email without him bothering me, or at least I just want him to miss me sometimes. lol

But yeah, I do agree, what will happen if most of your friends are invisible. Well, at least you can try sending an email for that important mesage you want to discuss with him, and he can see it quickly right?

Here, check my post about this Gmail chat new feature.

What will happen is the same thing that happens when your friends leave you 'hello are you there?" messages. And, if your friends are invisible too … um … maybe they don't want to be bothered?

You can determine if your friends are hiding under Invisible mode, though. Google left a backdoor: http://gainedknowledge.blogspot.com/2008/10/determine-whether-contact-is-actually.html

You know, I'm appalled that people do not respect their friends enough to leave them alone when they want to be left alone. Gee, it's no wonder the world is a shit hole when people can't even treat their friends with respect.

you can also find some extra features on the labs version of other Google products which allows you to make yourself invisible but it does not always override the gtalk client software if you have that installed
