US Census Bureau to ditch handhelds for 2010 census

Census worker with handheld GPS

The Census Bureau will not be going as high-tech in 2010 as originally planned, instead holding firm to the good old fashion pen and paper method. The lack of the GPS for census worked was due in part to “numerous glitches” that included the need for more workers as well as “recent increases in gas prices, postage, and printing.” That means that Congress is having to find an additional $3 billion to cover the cost, which could now rise as high as $14.5 billion.

The 2010 census, which will begin in March 2010 when the Census Bureau sends out a mailing to all US households, the 580,000 census workers will then be going door to door in an attempt of speaking with those that failed to return the form.

While the handheld devices will not be in the hands of all workers as hoped, it will not be entirely low-tech, the GPS-enabled Harris computers will instead be used prior to the actual census to compile what they are calling “the most accurate and comprehensive address list in the census’ history.” Here’s hoping to a better more tech-friendly 2020 census.

  1. The harrassing attempts, by democrats, to label everyone who questions their policies, are equal to harassment. I so wish they would stop their blame game and go to work. However, my wish would probably be considered mentally problematic and for this I should phone their shrinks who are living on site at the prison camps. Their number is 1-800-get-lost

We republicans will be labeled crazy I guess for daring to mention that Barry Soretoe is a nusiance admitted doper and con-artist. All he's done so far is read some other people's agenda and call it his own and stay out of the White House where the real work is generally done…

  2. This is bullshit. People are already having their doors knocked on by census workers with GPS units, and they freely admit they are using the GPS to map everyone's FRONT DOOR. Additionally, they are asking questions about other buildings (garages, barns etc) that may be on your property. They want to know if anyone lives in them, or if anyone COULD live in. Watch the disinfo, it isn't helping your fellow countrymen.

  3. Ed is correct. The Census Bureau, which was stripped from the Commerce Department and placed under the direct control of White House Chief of Staff, Rahm Emanuel (as for why, your guess is as good as mine), is conducting a GPS survey of EVERY INHIBITABLE SHELTER in the country and the location will be logged within 40 feet of the main/front door. Census personal (with census printed on their bags and “official business” signs on the vehicles have been seen at urban neighborhoods, RV parks, campgrounds, remote cabins, and everything in between. Here is the kicker: the project has to been completed in 90 days (no one knows exactly when it started). What is the hurry? The “census” doesn’t start until next year. The reason they won’t need GPS in 2010 is that the mapping would have already been performed. The least scary reason for the urgency is that democrats who have the super-majority in congress want to recreate the districts to ensure they maintain control- not that this contingency isn’t scary, but I can quickly think of a lot worse! History has shown that when a party gains majority control during an presidential election year, the mid-term election for senators, etc often brings in politicians from the other party to equal things out. It is public record that Rahm Emanuel is the man behind the “Civilian Security Force” that Obama has mentioned several times, which will entail 3 months of mandatory government service.

  4. Yeah, but this was in motion before Obama was even elected, here's an NPR article from 2006 where they talk about the plan to have the Census workers map out everyone's house using GPS. This was all part of a plan that was approved by Congress, and this was before the Democrats took control of the House and Senate in 2006.
