Rumor: Rogers to offer a $7-a-month unlimited data plan

Following up on the recent confirmation that Rogers will be indeed offering the iPhone “later this year” we are now left to wonder just how affordable their data plans will be. The latest word has it that they will be offering an unlimited plan for just $7-a-month, which sadly at this time is nothing more than a rumor and speculation as it has come from the wonderful “un-named source.”

Of course, it seems there is always a catch with the unlimited style plans and Rogers has plenty of limitations. For example, you cannot download an application that is not Rogers Certified and you are not allowed to tether your phone to your notebook. The last drawback currently applies to the N95 when used with this plan, so its likely that it would apply to the iPhone as well; if you launch your browser and do not see the Rogers homepage then you are outside of the allowable Internet. Which basically means, if you are doing any of the previously mentioned items then you will switched over to their $15 per MB rate plan and in turn see a much higher bill than the $7 you expected. Sounds messy, hopefully some more reliable details will come out before the official release.

  1. Fido does this (Fido is part of Rogers), but they have $7 'unlimited browsing' for their phones.

The thing is, Rogers will never have 'unlimited data' on any plan – which they've said before. It really sucks because they have the GSM monopoly in Canada.
