Palm CFO says, “The big difference is software. That’s where our core expertise really is.” He said this in a JP Morgan’s tech conference. Sure software is important, but by the look of things to come, they seem to be ignoring hardware.

At the tech conference, Palm promised their new OS based on Linux will be here by the end of the year and products out in first half of 2009. They’ve been cooking up this Linux base for 3 years now and many of us have grown tired of waiting.

Other tidbits dropped by Palm is the new OS will be on multiple devices and the Centro is doing great but they are not making anything on it.

“Clearly more of a platform for a range of products. One of the reasons we canceled a fairly significant product about a year ago was because we felt as though having a one, unified user experience for Palm products was important, that could be extensible beyond one product.”

So we’ve got lackluster styling changes combined with a forever-seeming OS devo cycle. What is spelled out here isn’t hard to read: Palm slips deeper into the coma…Are you still waiting?
