Canon has finally decided to update its popular entry-level digital single lens reflex camera, the Rebel XTI with a newer model donning the name Canon EOS Rebel XS. The new Rebel XS comes on the heels of the more advanced Rebel XSi which Canon announced a couple of months ago. And possibly due to the growing demand for a lower cost entry-level DSLR, Canon decided to come up with another model that would cater to the entry-level photo enthusiasts who are not yet willing to pay the price of the the XSi.
So, what does the new Rebel XS has in store for us? There’s quite a lot actually and for those who still have the older Rebel XTi, you would easily notice some resemblance between the XTi and the XS models. These include a 10.1-megapixel image sensor, a 2.5-inch LCD, a 7-point autofocus system, 81% viewfinder coverage, 12-bit image processing, spot metering and remote control functionality.
But as not to discourage the Rebel XTi users from upgrading to the EOS XS, Canon has made some slight changes with the features of the XS. These include a live view mode with contrast-detection autofocusing, DIGIC III image processor, 50% increase in battery life with a better LP-E5 as compared to the XTi’s NP-2LH.
This new Canon EOS Rebel XS will be available with either a black or silver body color and should be in stores sometime this summer. Official pricing has not yet been announced, but we’re suspecting that it would be slightly lower than the pricing of the Rebel XSi.

Have you looked at a side by side comparison of these cameras?
Both the XTi and XS have 10.1-megapixel image sensor, a 2.5-inch LCD, 81% viewfinder coverage, 12-bit image processing, spot metering and remote control functionality. The XTi has 9 point spot metering as compared to 7 point on the XS. Both have the Digic III processor. The XS does RAW shooting slightly slower than the XTi. The XS does have a slightly lower weight and longer battery life.
Try to do a better job next time when you list that one camera is bringing something to the table that the predecessor did not have.
for the comment above Ummm the XTI doesnt have spot metering at all… it only has partial metering….
Sure, the XS features Live View, but in my opinion, Live View completely negates the pros of having an SLR Camera. The 'through the lens' functionality provides faster shooting with more control and stabilization because the camera is held close to the body.
Has anyone actually tried using the Live View mode and zooming at the same time? It's impossible to hold the camera steady.
Also, the XS does not have the ability to use the IR remotes like the Rebel (D300), XT, XTi, XSi and T1i. Why would they remove this function? Even the higher end 50D has this ability, but they removed it in the XS. It sure as hell wasn't to lower the price. At $599, the XS is a mite too high.
Finally, the XS brings nothing to the table in terms of image quality that the XTi doesn't bring. I'd vouch for the less expensive, discontinued XTi and throw some extra money towards a better lens (maybe the 17-85 IS).
Cheers,
Matthew
