TeleNav on the iPhone 3G
TeleNav has confirmed they will be on the iPhone 3G using the GPS radio for turn by turn navigation in 3D. This comes as interesting news for a couple of reasons. One is Job’s statement that the GPS radio was not strong enough for turn by turn directions and two that Tom-Tom was the front runner in navigation partners.

“According to Apple, the iPhone’s G.P.S. antenna is much too small to emulate the turn-by-turn navigation of a G.P.S. unit for a vehicle, for example.” -David Pogue

Um, OK, so it is strong enough for TeleNav? Anyone else confused? More as it develops.

Also, I have a suspicion Gizmodo got the news slightly wrong: I believe the app will be available through the App store but you’ll still be charged a monthly access fee from TeleNav. This has been their business model and I don’t see them going for a one time application fee. You?

  2. I thought the chip was weak that your car's roof could block the signal… and also people were saying that the iphone wouldn't have turn by turn navigation… I guess this is awesome!

  3. Some more info:

"Though it's not among the 522 awesome apps launching today, TeleNav will soon fill a pretty big hole by providing a turn-by-turn in-car GPS navigator app for the iPhone 3G, as we speculated. TeleNav confirmed to us today that its app will include full-color 3D moving maps and the turn-by-turn voice guidance and traffic-aware routing the iPhone Maps program itself is missing. TeleNav already makes decent GPS nav software for Sprint and AT&T;phones, way better than Verizon's VZ Navigator. No word on price, but the good news is, it'd have to be available through the App Store, not as a subscription thing from AT&T;."

As for me, thats really NICE!
the only reason the 3g iphone as it is now can't do turn by turn is that google maps can't download the images fast enough over EDGE/3G. that, and google maps has some clause disallowing turn-by-turn.

  4. That is really nice, agree, but i'll still prefer using a dedicated gps system, that is cheep and reliable, and use the iphone as a…phone!
