Maplin’s new notebook: Too good to be true?

Maplin Minibook

I’ve never heard of a company called Maplin before, but they certainly have produced an excellent laptop with their Minibook Ultra Portable Laptop. (Yes, that is its official drawn-out name.) Maplin’s Minibook may not be the best laptop to use for doing some gaming on World of Warcraft, but it is certainly enough to check the email or to do a little net surfing.

The features include a 32-bit processor, a 128MB DDR2 RAM, and 2 GB of flash memory. It has Wi-Fi Connectivity, and even has an Ethernet port. There is a seven inch screen with a 800 x 480 display, an SD memory card slot, as well as three USB ports. As for the battery life, it has a 2200mAh battery that will last about three hours.

This new notebook has a very low price of about £169.99 (around $330 US). When I heard that price, I had one of those “too good to be true that it probably isn’t” flashbacks. I mean, my cellular phone costs more than that.

Perhaps this is a dawning of a new age, when laptops will be so inexpensive that you can purchase one for next to nothing. However, you may only have a few features come with this price, but how much do you really need for surfing the net while you’re watching television or something?

  1. if you bought one of these be warned! you will not easly get your money back, from maplin they say as its a memory product, we are not under any obligation to give refund, make sure it's what you want, its only have 128k cache memory, unknow 32bit cpu is very slugish sometimes its takes longer to boot up than my home made pc? with hard drive. application running under linux, are bit naf, also look at the asus before parting with your cash. according to maplin any product with memory, being purchased, you will have hard time getting your money back………. I took mine back one day after purchasing
It. I now have to wait up to 14 days whilst they decide, if they want to give me my refund, or send me my mini book back….? Never buy any thing from maplin again…

  2. Hi just a quick note on the article above, the first Minibook released, with Linux OS has since gone down to £89.99 (B Grade unit only as original has now been discontinued due to production issues in Taiwan) However a newer Windows CE edition of the Minibook has been released complete with Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Word, Internet Explorer and even MSN Messanger. With a 4GB SSD, SD/SDHC built in card reader, 3 USB ports one of which supports WIN CE Activesync. And is still purchasable in all Maplin stores for a grand total of £129.99! And propod that's bollocks those 14 days as you claim (8 days maximum) is for technicians to examine the Minibook to make sure nothing has been tampered with and if paid by cash will send out a cheque written to the customer, card payment will be debited back to account within 4 working days. I know all of this because i am a Maplin employee. I am not in love with my job because hey its just retail and your sweat is fueling the big boys' yacht. But i do however want to make money so i thought i might let you folks know about this pretty good deal so you can come on down to Maplin Electronics (preferably the Edmonton store) and put some money in my pocket

  3. Dont buy this piece off tat!!!
I was idiot enough to buy one for my son,i wish i read these reviews first!.Ive got one which may or may not start up,it depends on wether it wants to or not, well actually it did start up,twice in twenty attempts!!
Facebook, youtube, flickr, msn all displayed the message"the Internet explorer on your computer is old and is not supported by this web site, which although allowing me to view their home page, did not allow me to even scroll down the page, when trying to view a short video clip,it just froze, ending up with me having to shut down the whole thing, which led to the problem of starting it up again!..I would have been better off with a bloody abacus!!
I dont think i will get my money back as i bought it 19th november, but it was a xmass tree present,so i didnt find out how crap it was untill xmass day,but im still taking it back to Maplins, and if i dont get my money back, then i'm gonna kick off,big stylie!!
Just how can Maplins be allowed to sell such rubbish and get away with it?

  4. I managed to get my money back today,on my recipt it stated it was for a present,so i was given extra time to exchange the piece of shite for my money, the funny thing is that while i was waiting for my dosh, someone else came in with the same notebook, saying it was crap and he wanted his money back, but the poor bloke was told he had to wait for a final say by Maplin's head office, which can take 14 days!Cheeky bastards!..Once again,DONT BUY THIS PIECE OF SHITE,a pound shop calculator has got more power!!
