The announcement of SDXC cards intrigued a lot of us here at Gadgetell. The idea that you could have a card with up to 2TB of storage sounded great. We could throw everything we had one card and bring all of our data everywhere or just create massive storage libraries using these small cards.

So what did the SD people have at their CES booth? They had plenty of signs and a display of devices that use SD cards like camcorders. They also had lots of information on the new standard.

The SDXC spec will be released at the end of Q1. I asked if the 2TB limit was actually achieved in a lab or if it was a theoretical maximum and found out the 2TB limit has never been tested.

When can you actually get your hands on a 2TB SDXC card? Not any time soon. The rep said it would probably take five years to reach that maximum. It took SDHC three years to reach its maximum of 32GB.

Also, even though the minimum capacity of a SDXC is 32GB, expect the first cards to come out next year at 64GB.
