Windows Mobile LogoFor most of us, Windows Mobile is the smartphone OS we love to hate. It’s clunky, awkward, and just a pain to actually use for extended periods of time. There’s been rumors of a new version for quite a while now, and it is sorely needed. In a recent conference call, Sanjay Jha, CEO of Motorola, mentioned the company will see “renewed interest in the Windows Mobile platform in 2010, with a likely new release.”

Granted, there’s a chance the OS will be pushed back, or might be ready before 2010. Next year would seem the latest acceptable release for the next major upgrade, as it’s quickly losing ground at the moment from the iPhone, Android, BlackBerry and the upcoming Pre.

In addition to the mention of Windows Mobile, Sanjay Jha also mentioned that Motorola will have a strong emphasis on Android throughout 2009. The company plans to modify the platform to have a strong emphasis on social networking, which could possibly lead to a larger audience for Android.

There’s nothing concrete to go on aside from what Jha has said, but given that it was in a conference call regarding fall 2009 earnings, it’s likely that these things will come to fruition. It would be nice to see the social networking emphasis on Android and to see what Motorola can do with an open platform. And, maybe, just maybe by 2010 people will still care about Windows Mobile
