Rumor: Windows 7 pricing to begin at $199

The latest rumor surrounding Windows 7 deals with the pricing, and in this case I am not sure I can believe the numbers. To begin with, they have come courtesy of an “anonymous tip and is not from a trusted source.” Also on top of that, the prices seem to be a little high, especially on the lower end Windows 7 Starter version, which coincidentally is supposed to be available only to OEM’s.

So, right or wrong, what we have so far is:

  • Windows 7 Starter: $199
  • Windows 7 Home Premium: $259
  • Windows 7 Professional: $299
  • Windows 7 Ultimate: $319

It is also important to point out that the source of the rumor has these prices noted as being for the full version and not the upgrade. I guess time will tell just how accurate these prices truly are. I have been running the beta of Windows 7, which is the Ultimate version since the public release and can say that I am more than happy with it, that said I am not sure I am happy enough to warrant a $319 price tag.

  1. While windows 7 beta is very good (a first for a windows beta) and I would like a copy
I find the prices above insulting. If MS keep alienating their potential customers with this insane pricing practices they will loose them. Most people only use windows for games compatibility.
