The #1 problem with Google Sync

You might recall Doug Berger’s post enlightening us all a work around from NuevaSync to get your Google Calendar onto your iPhone. Google released Google Sync to handle not only your Google Calendar but also contacts. Google does this using the Exchange protocols built into your phone.

Google Sync brings all the data in your Gmail contacts and Google Calendar to your phone via Microsoft’s Active Sync. Google licensed this bit of tech so we can probably expect to see Android phones feature this connectivity enhancement. Sounds great right? Not for me and my corporate drone buddies. Users can only sync their phones with one Exchange server.

For us corporate types, we have to choose between Google and work databases to sync with. I don’t know about my buddies, but right now, I am just trying to keep my job. So, this update doesn’t do me any good. One workaround is using MobileMe and Exchange, the two can co-exist. The data is simply kept separate, not unlike the Google Calendar sync I have set with Outlook.

Alas, this feature as well as all of Gmail is still in Beta. This means we can expect hiccups along the way. This could open some interesting doors for Google services and ultimately Android but for right now, many of us just yawn.
