After the unveiling of Kindle 2 earlier this week, the industry was aflutter about all of the new upgrades that Amazon has made to their reader device. The new Kindle 2 will feature a five way navigation joystick, speedy wireless downloading times and a sync feature for Kindle 2 and mobile devices. The feature that has stirred up the most controversy is the text to speech feature embedded in the device.
Opponents have said that this feature is an audio right, which falls under copyright law. Some fear that this will steal sales away from the audio book industry. Amazon was quick to fire back that the feature is dependent upon the text to speech technology and that it is quite different from listening to an audio book.
Either way, Kindle 2 is sure to be a success and will likely sell as quickly as the first generation version did over the holiday season. Amazon is pricing the Kindle 2 at $359 (same as original) and shipping will begin on February 24.
