You’ve got to hand it to Intellon. Intellon makes circuitry for HomePlug devices which can network over power lines. Their latest toy is a security camera that gets its power from a light socket. Take a lamp or a lighting fixture, pop out the bulb, and screw in a security camera. The camera is now on your network and already has power. These cameras even have infrared so you can see what’s going on in low light situations.
This is a great stop gap solution until all homes eventually have Ethernet wiring. Light sockets are virtually everywhere. Just think about putting a camera at your front door without having to wire anything. I also see lots of prank opportunities if silly people like me get their hands on one of these. Since they operate via your existing wiring, there is a measure of security that not just anyone can intercept your signals unless they plug in and have the right credentials.
