Live from the Amazon event at Pace UniversityHello folks, we will be live shortly with the Amazon event if the thing starts on time. It’s scheduled for Wednesday, May 6 at 10:30 AM ET. Most are expecting a new version of the Kindle that integrates with newspapers (especially the New York Times) and textbooks easily. What will we see? Hit refresh to see the latest!

We’re outside of the event now. We’ll have pictures and video up very soon!

The line length is really a margin control. Nice option.

Now a textbook example. Nice image of fish biology. To look up a word, bring your cursor to a word, and the bottom of the screen shows you a definition. If you want a more extensive definition, you can get to that as well.

New feature for Kindle DX:
not only can you change the font size
you can decide how many words per line.

Jeff is showing off how to scan through stories quickly using the 5-way controller. You can also go to the sections list to find your particular section. You can view summaries of headlines (kind of like an RSS feed with a sentence of content).

Video’s fixed. Spoke too soon. Demo has been halted, and now restarted. Back to newspapers.

3:01 pm Iyaz Akhtar said:

“I’m going to choose to find this hilarious.” (re the video issue).

3:00 pm Iyaz Akhtar said:

Video on the demo has gone backwards. Jeff’s working the crowd, “Think of yourself seeing this through a mirror.”

3:00 pm Iyaz Akhtar said:

The Kindle DX doesn’t have any “DX” branding from what I can see. The top of the device just says “amazon kindle.” Jeff just showed off sheet music and it looked good. Now he’s showing off some paper about rockets. Looks good.

2:58 pm Iyaz Akhtar said:

We’ll have video of the demo up soon.

2:57 pm Iyaz Akhtar said:

Kindle will allow the NYT to provide delivery to places they normally couldn’t with their print version.

Demo time with Kindle DX

NY Times Chairman, Arthur O. Sulzberger, Jr. is talking about how they’ve been waiting for a technology like this. He’s talking about reinvention for digital media regarding the newspaper industry.

2:53 pm Iyaz Akhtar said:

Jeff said “automagically” re: delivery of newspapers.

This summer – 3 newspapers will offer Kindle DX for reduced prices in exchange for long term commitments re: subscriptions

New York Times, Washington Post, and Boston Globe

2:52 pm Iyaz Akhtar said:

The President of Case Western Reserve is now done (she talked about how great technology has been in academics).

Jeff “What about newspapers?”

2:49 pm Iyaz Akhtar said:

What about the students?

Got the textbooks and the device — 5 top universities will trial Kindle DX this fall ASU, Case Western, Princeton, Reed College, Univ. of Virginia. Pres. of Case Western is here.

2:48 pm Iyaz Akhtar said:

Auto rotate built in. Complex structure is supposed to be easier to see. Now why would you want to buy a regular Kindle 2 then?

Textbooks shine with this display. Reached agreement w/ 3 leading textbook publishers — represent 60% of the text books.

Jeff is showing examples of textbooks on the Kindle dx. They look good.

2:48 pm Iyaz Akhtar said:

Kindle DX is the name, it’s what we all expected so far.

2:44 pm Iyaz Akhtar said:

Paper is just better to read off of when compared to a laptop. Now “just one thing” most of the docs we print and read are 8 1/2″ x 11″ Anyone see where this is going?

2:43 pm Iyaz Akhtar said:

Jeff Bezos is talking about the lack of the paperless society. We print waaay too much. Jeff is hating on the ink toner cartridges of printers. “Why do we print so much?”

2:39 pm Iyaz Akhtar said:

He’s talking about how the Kindle Store has added 275k books in the last 3 months. Kindle sales are now 35% of books (if there’s a kindle version).

2:38 pm Iyaz Akhtar said:

Jeff Bezos is taking the stage.

2:28 pm Iyaz Akhtar said:

Lots of chatter in the audience about what’s expected. Will it have a touchscreen or not? How will it work as a textbook? The music is suggesting we get aboard the “Love Train.”

2:12 pm Iyaz Akhtar said:

Big stage with a nice large screen and a podium.

2:08 pm Iyaz Akhtar said:

We’re seated in the second row. Coverage is coming up soon.
