Amazon offering gift cards for DVD, Blu-ray and HD DVD trade-insI wish I could say that this was a brand new offer from Amazon, but either way it was new to me, so it is likely to be new to others as well. In what may be a possible sign of the current economic times, Amazon is currently offering to trade your old DVDs, Blu-ray and HD DVD discs in for gift cards. Basically, all you need to do is choose what items you want to trade-in, then pack them for shipment (which is free) and sit back and wait for your gift card to hit your account.

There are a few rules that go along with the trade-in though. To begin with, the movies must be in what Amazon refers to as “good condition” which really just means that they need to be undamaged and in the original package including the cover art. Additionally, once you decide on the items you are going to trade-in and submit them to Amazon, you then have to have your shipment postmarked within 7 days. Of course, on the flip side, it only takes “2 business days” to have your gift card deposited in your account.

Finally, and I think this should most likely go without saying, but don’t expect to get full retail, or even close to it for your trade-ins. Just take The Ultimate Matrix Collection as an example, on Blu-ray you will get $27.50 and only $7.00 on DVD. Of course, even getting just a few bucks is still better than selling them at a garage sale.

Personally, this sounds great, especially considering I recently moved and discovered I had about a 100 movies that I had forgotten about and since learned that I can live without. Now I just have to pack them up and decide what to do with my new found Amazon gift cards.
