You might not want your kids using Bing

baddabingWell…maybe that’s where Microsoft came up with the name for their new search engine. Badda Bing is right indeed. Because, with this search engine, it seems nothing is off limits.

Even though Bing wasn’t supposed to be out for another couple of days, they apparently decided to launch a bit early. To one-up Google perhaps? And it seems, that in at least one area they have certainly outdone themselves. I just don’t know if you want to suggest this new search engine to your kids.

One of the little features Bing sports is the ability to view videos by just hovering over them. You don’t have to go to the source site. Now…of course, this feature has lots of folks typing in the words “sex” and “porn”….and my oh my. Let’s just say I probably wouldn’t try this experiment at work or with minors in the room. Because, this isn’t just videos that are a little risque coming up in the results…no, you’ve got it all. And no, they didn’t edit and block out anything.

The way Bing is supposed to work, according to Steve Ballmer, is that when you look something up, the most relevant result comes up first, basing it on algorithms and human intervention, as opposed to Google’s page ranking which goes by popularity. It is supposed to be what is “really relevant.” Okay.

Now, this could obviously be a good thing, and a handy little tool, but it could also cause lots of “Oh dear me’s!!!!” even on accident. Granted, if you have safe browsing set on your computer, they shouldn’t show up. But it takes a whopping two clicks to get rid of that “security” feature. And I’m sure Junior will be deterred when it asks him “Are you really 18 or older?”

I’ll be curious to see if they don’t do something more about this video feature. Or if the sites being displayed for anyone to view won’t mind their stuff being made available to the masses without the masses coming to them.

  1. I think you are over hyping the issue. I don't think using Bing is going to make such difference besides Microsoft is currently working on Pron Filter.
