Voice in your head says Palm Pre is better than iPhone + 3.0 update

Now that leading edge users have downloaded and installed iPhone 3.0, many are wondering if it is enough to keep them in love with uber-phone or start casting longing glances at the new Palm Pre. We’ll take a quick look at some of the things iPhone users have been waiting for and then provide a reality check in comparison to Palm’s entry.

Push Notifications

“…works so well, that you would almost think the applications was running in the background.” – TUAW

Umm, OK. Apparently with the 70+ applications I’ve got, zero take advantage of this hot, sexy, new feature. ZZZZ. Is this something that I thought I needed but the developers just don’t see it this way?

The voice in my head says, “You know, the Palm Pre actually runs applications in the background, not just pretends too.”

Spotlight Search

Watching how great search can be implemented at Palm’s Pre announcement back in January, many of us couldn’t wait to hear how Apple was going to respond. True to form, Spotlight Search is convenient, easy to use, and seems to work well. Swiping is fun, right?

The voice in my head says, “Palm made this look so cool. Apple’s interpretation leads me to ask, ‘Why am I searching for something?’ Am I ever going to use this? Have I become so scatterbrained that I won’t go looking for an email in the actual email app? I am getting the dead fish handshake here, sure you still go through the motions but something is missing. Did I mention how much better I would look doing this on a Palm Pre?”

Invasion of the Landscape Keyboard

During the learning curve of the touchscreen keyboard, many of us begged and pleaded for an easier way. Many of us resorted to just using the GMail web app so we could bang out emails in landscape. But going out to the Internet seems just so old fashioned.

Now, 3.0 brings landscape typing into everything: email, notes, just about anywhere you can enter text (except that brand new Spotlight search). Users rejoice!

The voice in my head says,”Turns out I am never going to use this. I still make typing mistakes like a fiend but that isn’t going to get me to keep changing from portrait to landscape. It’s become habit. You know, on the Palm Pre those buttons just look so touchable – you’d stop embarrassing yourself when you type your cute German catch phrases only to have the iPhone auto-correct them into something silly like ‘crunchy crankcase.’”

Voice Memo

Yes! Record notes on the go. Send voice notes to your friends. This is a simple app that should have been on the device for years.

The voice in my head says, “Um, your voice sounds stupid recorded”. The Palm Pre would never make you look or sound stupid.

Summary

Clearly, the voice in my head wants the Pre. My brain says otherwise as my contract is still in diapers. I believe I’ll be able to resist this voice pointing out the stumbling points of the iPhone at each corner, but it will be mighty annoying. How about you? What does your voice say (with respect to phones only, please)?

  1. A voice in MY head says I'll never get back the 1 minute it took to read this useless article.

  2. Why did I waste my time even reading this. At no point was there any substantial reasoning to the Pre being better than an IPhone. If this were a salesman trying to talk me into a Pre over the IPhone at a store, I would think he was mentally challenged or something.

  3. What a waste. When I read a post titled, "Voice in your head…" I expect some kind of well thought out reasoning to help me make sense of all this hype. At least, that is what happens when I listen to the other voices in my head.

The update to iPhone 3.0 is fine but by no means awesome. There was a reason it took Apple two years to get to this stuff.

  4. In all my years of gadget addiction, I've found that in general, the 3rd device is a charm. We're there now with the iPhone — the Pre (WebOS) has a way to go — your contract should be out of diapers by then, and who knows what'll have come to market at that time…

  5. The Voice in my head says that whoever wrote this junk is mentally challenged and retarded and made me waste time out of my life and a few breaths's but writing this comment to let this turd know makes me feel better about such waste…

  6. To "Los Pendejos"= Dave, Kevin and Jose:

Your fanboism is way over the edge, oh well, can't see good competition even if it hits you on the face.
The Palm Pre is a great device, and in a lot of places, it has way better coverage thanks to Sprint better 3G network compare to AT&T's crappy network.
Oh, did I mention the plans for the Pre are also cheaper?
That is why I jumped ship to Sprint on June 6th, and I been using both; the Pre and iPhone side by side since than, and I have to say this; my Pre is by all means better than my iPhone, as soon as my contract ends with crappy AT&T, iPhone goes on sale and I will have a cook out. Of course all of you are invited (even Los Pendejos), just don't be jealous or feel 19th Century when close to my Pre. Hahaha :-)

  7. To Chingon-

Me cago en la puta de tu madre que me estoy clavando en este mismo instante!

To Mr. Mason- How old are you, 8? Was there even a smidge of a fact in there? The voices in MY head clearly say that you are stealing precious oxygen in this planet and should be summarily ejected from it.

  8. TuMadre: Lewd comments are still lewd in Spanish…even bad Spanish.

  9. Min said, off load my 3G (for $280) and buy a 3Gs for $199+tax. Sweet deal.

  10. Your only reasoning to the claim that the pre is better is that you "won't look stupid doing it on the pre". Interestingly enough, the pre looks like something you would see a nerd at a Star Trek convention carrying….thinking he looked cool with his dork ass Star Trek. Beam me up douche bag!

    TByrd
  11. thats a great which phone is better the iphone or the pre? then price does not make a difference.
question does anyone remeber an article on the formating of a thumb drive? it was about 6 months ago.

    edsimon
  12. I for one… LOVED your article.

My advice… do as I did. Cancel your ATT contract, give them your $175 for doing so… SELL your iphone for $450… come out ahead, and own the Palm Pre!

I do not regret it, and I do not miss the mis-spelled words, the constant backspacing to correct mis-spelled words, the lack of flash on the camera, and the clunkiness of a rectangle in my pocket!

Thanks for your sense of humor!

  13. Oops.. almost forgot to mention the $936 you'll save over the two year contract by switching to Sprint!
Put THAT in your iphone and smoke it! :)

    Happy Halloween!
