Some people who had their Pre for less than a month even got refunds for the difference. Those who had snapped up the smartphone when the Pre was first released reacted angrily, the same way early iPhone adopters had when Apple suddenly dropped the price from $599 to $399.
Alas, it was, at least according to Best Buy, a mistake, and the price was promptly returned to $199. Those who hadn’t gotten in before it was discovered were out of luck. Some are speculating that it really wasn’t much of a mistake at all and that Palm is indeed planning to drop the price to make the phone more competitive during the upcoming Back to School and holiday seasons. Best Buy just accidentally jumped the gun. A price drop would make sense as it would position the Pre in line with the iPhone 3G. There’s been no word from Palm yet on any pricing changes though.
