1080p HD (also known as “full HD”) has been a standard for camcorders for some time. Recently, 1080p has found its way into pocket camcorders. Now webcams are about to enter the world of full HD.
OmniVision has introduced a new CMOS image sensor which offers 1080p HD video at 30 frames per second. The sensor, the OV2710, is 1/3 inches and the manufacturer claims it can handle low light situations well. As an aside, for better video, try to get good lighting. OmniVision expects to see this sensor in mobile phones, netbooks, and notebooks.
With this new technology, expect more and more devices to get the ability to shoot in 1080p HD. Another aside, don’t expect all 1080p video to be created equal. There’s much more to video than just the sensor.
