Both Samsung and Western Digital unveil 640GB laptop hard drives

Carrying around your collection of videos, music, photos, and maybe even work documents got even easier today as two 640GB 2.5-inch hard drives were unveiled from Samsung and Western Digital. Both units spin at 5400RPM and cost $149.99 and claim to be very quiet (Samsung has its “SilentSeek” and “Noiseguard” and Western Digital has its “WhisperDrive”). The big difference between the two? Availability. Western Digital’s Scorpio Blue 640GB is shipping now and it comes with a three year warranty. The Samsung 640GB Spinpoint M7 will be available later this month – the U.S. and Europe will get it mid-September, while the rest of the world can expect it in late September, 2009.
