ooma Telo just around the corner, to launch October 2009

October is coming and so is the ooma Telo. We first heard about the ooma Telo back in January at a small event called CES 2009 and it will finally be released on October 1st, 2009. Unfamiliar with the Telo? Here’s how this works: buy the ooma Telo and connect it to your home network. Attach a phone handset to the Telo and you can make free phone calls forever (with some limitations).

Last time we saw the Telo it was behind glass, but this time we got to handle the device personally. The Telo unit itself (the base station that attaches to your router) is not very large. Take a look at the included gallery and you can see how large a simple Ethernet cable looks when plugged into the back of the device.

There is a handset that will also be released in November 2009 after the Telo’s October launch. There are no bundles that include both the base station and the handset yet. Remember, you can use the base station with regular old telephones. That being said, the new Ooma handset is pretty for a home phone. The back is a glossy plastic, but the buttons are a matte finish. The screen was bright and easy to read.

Back in January, there were plans for Skype integration as well. If you had a Skype phone number, you could have it sent to your ooma. Since the recent sale of Skype, the developer program that Skype had in place, is no longer active. If you had a Skype line and wanted an ooma Telo to bridge the gap, sorry.

  1. Ooma claimed at CES in January the Telo would have bluetooth allowing connected phonebook and mobile transfer. Any news on whether this made it into the Telo launching Oct 1?

Rumors are flying that Ooma put off bluetooth until second gen Telo due out Q1 2010.

  2. If I am correct, telo is just the phone, so that you do not need your own phone, nothing else. Or,.. I am missing something???

Will it make international calls free ??

Will it be worked like a cell phone???

I still do not understand, how far is this different than the original ooma?? Just the looks and a wireless phone provided, that's it ???

    Pl. explore.

    Thanks
