Ubuntu based Dell Vostro A90 netbook on sale for $184 Anyone looking for a deal on a netbook may want to check out one of the latest offerings coming courtesy of Dell. The netbook that is on sale is the Dell Vostro A90 and can be purchased for just $184.

Of course, there are a few points that may cause people to think twice — this particular model is running Ubuntu 8.04 and has a smaller (8.9-inch) display. Otherwise, the features are pretty much the netbook standard. The Vostro A90 sports an 8.9-inch display with a 1024 x 600 resolution, an Intel Atom N270 processor, 1GB of RAM, a 8GB SSD drive, Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g and a 4-cell battery.

All things considered, this is certainly not the best, fastest or most powerful netbook available, but for $184 it seems like it would make a nice addition to someones living room. Its always nice to have that extra PC laying around for the kids or guests.

Of course, getting back to that one point — Ubuntu 8.04 — personally I would suggest switching this over to the latest version of Ubuntu Netbook Remix or Jolicloud, both of which are available for free and also supported on the A90.

This seems like a good deal. I have a similar netbook (asus eee pc 900a) with almost identical specs except I only have a 4gb ssd. After installing Ubuntu Netbook Remix 9.10 (without swap), there is still 1.3 gb of free space for additional programs and files, but having an extra 4gb with the 8gb ssd in the A90 is a plus. You can also use an SD card to boost storage capacity.

Also, I actually prefer the smaller 9" screens to the 10" and 11" inchers. It makes the unit extremely lightweight and portable. I also prefer the smaller solid state drives over the larger (but more fragile) hard disk drives. I feel like i don't have to baby it as much as a normal laptop computer when even a slightest bump could potentially damage your drive.

I don't think some people understand how convenient these small netbooks can be. I hardly ever have to bust out my 15" in laptop anymore. Just like the article states, I leave mine in my living room for casual browsing, email, and instant messenger chats. It also plays youtube and hulu videos great.

Like the article states, you should definitely install the latest version of Ubuntu Netbook Remix (9.10). You will not be disappointed. The image can be found here: http://www.ubuntu.com.
