G1

A recent article from our friends over at Engadget claims that the G1 (you remember? the first Android device) will be getting an over-the-air update with the rest of the latest Android devices to the new 2.0, or possibly, the Nexus One’s 2.1 software. While this would be a great update for all of the current T-Mobile users, I would be interested to see if this will become a habit for all carriers to update Android software.

With Android climbing in marketshare due to multiple devices, it will be interesting to see if carriers will leave older devices in the dust while the latest and greatest are the only handsets with the new software. While any consumer would absolutely love the free updates, the amount of strain put on a network along with the risk of updating thousands of devices across the country, might be a turn-off to carriers. While T-Mobile, in this case, does not have to worry about updating tons of phones, compared to, say Verizon who would need to update both Droid branded devices, it will no doubt be a big upgrade to the new software.
