Three men have been arrested in Slovenia in connection with the Mariposa botnet. Mariposa was disabled last year but had managed to infect several million computers before it was laid to rest. It stole personal information and launched several Denial of Service (DDoS attacks). For awhile it managed to avoid detection by rapidly changing its code, somestimes as much as once every 48 hours. Its downfall was brought on by the bot herders themselves-in an act of true stupidity, one of them used his real name to register the domains used to host Mariposa’s command and control servers. The registar, unfortunately for them, was happy to cooperate with investigators!
