Your local library may not have the biggest selection of DVD’s to pick from, but it seems like they are providing a fairly popular method of borrowing movies. According to a survey that was done by OCLC Online Computer library Center — the public libraries are offering more DVD’s each day as compared to Netflix. The data is showing that libraries across the US are loaning out up to 2.1 million DVD’s per day. And that word — loaning — that may be the key here. They are free to borrow from the library, and while I would imagine that many libraries will vary — our county system here allows for DVD’s to be kept for one week at a time. Not bad for a free rental. Of course, if its not returned on time then you will get a $1 per day late fee. And that 2.1 million as compared to Netflix, they have 1.4 million rented daily. In the end, I am not sure if I should be surprised. The library seems like an outdated system for getting movies. But at the same time — free often wins. Not to mention I cannot say anything bad because my family (for the kids) typically borrows 3-4 movies per week.
