According to Financial Times (FT), Google’s YouTube unit is in talks with Hollywood studios to begin offering streaming movie rentals by years end. FT’s info suggests $5 streaming rentals (not downloads). The news fits nicely with Google’s already announced TV box that aims to bring Internet goodness to TVs.
FT’s news comes as the battle for your TV is expanding past cable vs. satellite. Today, Google and Apple are looking to become platform players while companies like Netflix and Pandora look to bring added features to a connected TV world. Google’s apparent move here moves their Google TV plans to be inline with Apples.
Word is streaming rentals will be available on the day a movie’s DVD is released.
