Tablets are incredibly popular right now, only issue for some is that they all run some sort of mobile OS, whether it be iOS or Android. The ExoPC Slate is perhaps the only interesting tablet out there running a desktop OS has been pushed back a few weeks, but is finally up for pre-order.
The ExoPC Slate is a Windows 7 tablet that places a customized UI over the OS to make it more touch-friendly. It uses a special layer of Flash and Javascript to make regular Windows apps touchscreen compatible. Until today, the Slate was shipping on September 30, but it has now been pushed back to October 15. With the delay comes the announcement that both the 32 and 64 GB versions of the Slate will be using SanDisk P4 mini-SSDs that a quite fast (220 MB/s read, 160 MB/s write speeds), that should give both versions about four hours of battery life. The 64 GB version was stripped of it’s GPS unit, however.
The ExoPC Slate is up for pre-order now with the 32 GB version going for CAD $649 (USD 624), and the 64 GB version going for CAD $749 (USD 720). Not a bad price considering the device has the guts of a netbook capable of 1080p video playback. At 11.6-inches, it’s a bit smaller than the JooJoo, but still larger than most other tablets we’ve been seeing lately. Although, with just 4 hours of battery life, you’d have to wonder if the size and price are really worth it.
